Sphalerons and Electroweak Strings
نویسنده
چکیده
We show that the sphaleron energy which identifies with the (instanton) potential barrier for B-violation is reduced in the presence (background) of an electroweak Z-string. We also show that for large enough Higgs coupling, λ, the sphaleron energy can go negative. For such λ, electroweak Z-strings can reduce their energy by accumulating sphaleron bound states. This further endows them with baryon number. Given our approximation, the value of λ at which this occurs is rather large to be realistic for the standard electroweak model. Typeset using REVTEX 1

Electroweak Baryogenesis with Cosmic Strings? Electroweak Baryogenesis with Cosmic Strings?
I report on a critical analysis of the scenario of electroweak baryoge-nesis mediated by nonsuperconducting cosmic strings. This mechanism relies upon electroweak symmetry restoration in a region around cosmic strings, where sphalerons would be unsuppressed. I discuss the various problems this scenario has to face, presenting a careful computation of the sphaleron rates inside the strings, of t...

In this talk I would like to discuss three main topics. First, I will connect electroweak strings and the sphaleron in a more elaborate manner than that described in my paper with George Field 1 and discuss the important issue of the stability of electroweak strings. Secondly, I would like to initiate a discussion of the formation of electroweak strings and their evolution by painting a heurist...
متن کاملStrong Sphalerons and Electroweak Baryogenesis
We analyze the spontaneous baryogenesis and charge transport mechanisms suggested by Cohen, Kaplan and Nelson for baryon asymmetry generation in extended versions of electroweak theory. We find that accounting for non-perturbative chiralitybreaking transitions due to strong sphalerons reduces the baryonic asymmetry by the factor (mt/πT ) 2 or αW , provided those processes are in thermal equilib...
متن کاملA Confining Strong First-Order Electroweak Phase Transition
In the Randall-Sundrum model where the radion is stabilized by a Goldberger-Wise (GW) potential there is a supercooled transition from a deconfined to a confined phase at temperatures orders of magnitude below the typical Standard Model critical temperature. When the Higgs is localized at the IR brane the electroweak phase transition is delayed and becomes a strong first-order one where the Uni...

We discuss two independent issues about the baryon asymmetry of the universe. First, assuming that it is generated by an unspecified source at high temperatures, we study the effects of non-perturbative SU(2)W dynamics above the electroweak scale, in the context of supersymmetric models. We find that there is a substantial difference with the nonsupersymmetric case with the net effect of relaxi...
